Biography

Born in Germany, Hildegard achieved a BA (Hons) in Interior Architecture from the University of the Applied Sciences, Trier, Germany in 1985. In the mid-nineties, she discovered her passion for glass, culminating in 1999 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Glass and Architecture from Central Saint Martins College, London. Graduating with distinction, Hildegard advanced to designing and implementing architectural glass installations in German and British glass studios.

Hildegard employs colour and light with playful effect. Working with dichroic glass, which displays various colours by refracting different light wavelengths, she creates compositions using a blend of form, light, and ever-changing colour intensity. Inspired by textiles, minimalist art, and architecture, she explores patterns in transient light, emphasising the importance of light direction and type in her work. As Hildegard states, "With light passing through the glass, multiple projections can be created where colours change, meet, and mix."

In some artworks, light not only transmits through the glass onto the background but also reflects onto the sandblasted glass in front. This two-way transmission of light and colour creates an ethereal colour space within the artwork.

Hildegard enjoys working in a variety of sizes. As each artwork is light-reactive they are able to be hung in different orientations depending on the type of light and its direction, to create the most intense colour effects in a specific location.

A finalist in the London Contemporary Art Prize 2018, Hildegard's work has been showcased in the Collect Art Fair, London, Art Miami, and SOFA Chicago.
