Steve Gallagher
My experience as a fashion photographer has translated across to my fine art photography, where flowers are now my models, and the natural world is my canvas.
Steve Gallagher is a Sussex-based fine art photographer, originally from Iowa in the American Midwest. He graduated with a Fine Arts degree in Visual Design and Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and worked as an editorial fashion photographer in Chicago, Miami and New York. He then built a successful career in advertising and digital design before moving to London and then the south coast of the UK.
Now settled by the sea, his love of photography was reignited by the beauty of the surrounding countryside and coastal waters. This led naturally to his photographic focus on floral portraits and seascapes. The confinement of the Covid pandemic imposed a time and space to distil his art, allowing Steve to focus on refining and redefining his practice over this period, to produce the intricate and skilfully-composed photographs that characterise his work. His floral studies in particular invite the viewer to pause and take time to consider the beauty and complexity of the natural world around them.
Steve is known for his innovative approach to his creative practice, and has extended his use of media to create pieces on cloth, metal, glass and lenticular 3D images. Steve’s limited edition lenticular studies are uniquely captivating in their depth and detail, bringing their floral subjects to life and immortalising them in a three-dimensional celebration of colour, texture and pattern. His expert use of light, shade and colour resembles that of a fine art painter, while his use of 3D photographic techniques brings a uniquely contemporary sensibility to his work.
