Biography

Exploring themes of geometry in the landscape is my main focus and inspiration. I seek out unusual shapes and lines in rock formations on my walks in the countryside, or coastal areas.

Chowwai was born and raised in Leicestershire, UK, later moving to Devon where she continues to live and work. In 1992, she graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a first-class BA (Hons) in Textile/Fashion, specialising in printed textiles.

Chowwai creates layered, geometric landscapes using acrylic and oil stick on wood panel. This technique allows her to build up the surface of each piece into a collage of planes and lines. Regarding her landscapes, Chowwai explains:

My artwork is informed by the landscapes of the Southwest, especially those of Devon and Dorset. I am fascinated by rock formations and the shape of the land, inspiring me to create geometric landscapes that emphasise the spatial boundaries between shape and form. I seek to express a suggestive ambiguity in my work that explores the tension between depth and surface.

The combination of hard-edged shapes, soft translucent tones and textures, and a varied colour palette are intuitively layered, providing Chowwai with the creative freedom to develop each piece and achieve the tension between depth and surface that she strives for.

Chowwai has exhibited her work in numerous exhibitions, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Royal West of England Academy, and the National Open Print Exhibition.
