Rose Vickers
I think I just like useful things; I find that the commonplace can be incredibly relatable and evocative.
Rose was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and graduated with a First Class BA (Hons) degree in Applied Arts from the University of Derby in 1997.
Currently living and working in Bristol, UK, Rose's earlier artworks predominantly utilised found and thoughtfully collected materials subsequently responding to their intrinsic narrative qualities. Employing a handmade aesthetic and maintaining her fondness for everyday objects, her recent focus revolves around the re-appropriation of school rulers and yardsticks. In a subtle nod to earlier utopian ideals and a celebration of the practicality of simple tools, Rose transforms reclaims vintage rulers into precisely crafted geometric artworks.
Her art also alludes to the tradition of crafting patchwork quilts, emphasising the necessity of using readily available materials. In this process, Rose creates pieces that, in part, serve as narrative documents of their makers' lives. By repeating the same structural pattern, she endeavours to generate new narratives and interpretations.
Rose has undertaken diverse public and private commissions in the UK, Europe, and beyond, including Miami, New York, Hong Kong, and Singapore. In 2014, she received the Royal West Academy Evolver Cover Prize, and her artworks are featured in the Bathurst Collection at Lydney Hall in South Wales.
