Biography

My work has also become much more focused on time, how we spend it and the stories we choose to document.

Cicely Creswell lives and works in the Surrey Hills, UK. She creates intricate narratives in ink, exploring time and connection. The flattened and distorted perspectives in Cicely’s work draw from manuscripts and texts. Formally, her work is built on the same concept as words on a page: flatness and detail transform into worlds, ideas, and stories upon closer inspection.

Her works demand time for thorough exploration. We are invited to embark on a journey, discovering nuances and information woven into each piece. This deliberate complexity serves a purpose—to slow you down, allowing you to consider the entirety, the minutiae, and the process of looking itself.

Having previously pursued studies and a career in history and in wine; Cicely’s work documents the connections between people, health, humanity, and the ecosystem we inhabit. Landscapes and rocks are more than simple scenery; bodies make up and shape the land, and the hills transform into living, breathing entities.

In the intricate details and deliberate storytelling of Cicely’s work, we can pause, reflect, and discover the beauty that lies in the connections between us and the world we shape.

Recently, she was awarded the Edinburgh Printmakers Award at the Royal Scottish Academy.
