Olly Fathers
It’s a beautiful thing being able to use a natural material as your medium, and each batch of veneers is unique in its own way so I really value and respect every piece of wood.
Olly (b.1987) is an artist based in Brixton, South London. Born in the county of Staffordshire, UK, he graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art in 2010.
Olly crafts meticulously finished, captivating artworks using various wood veneers, including tulip, beech, oak, walnut, and sycamore. Driven by a passion for wood and a keen interest in its role in Art and Design, he explores the relationships between abstract shapes and the veneers’ colour, patterning, and surface textures. Drawing inspiration from architecture and culture, and encompassing early computer technology and graphics, Olly achieves equilibrium through the simple equipoise and counterpoise of each element within the artwork.
His well-balanced, yet bold compositions, entice viewers to examine the precision involved in execution. Olly’s dedication to woodwork led him to develop highly accurate, self-taught marquetry techniques. With a keen eye for detail, he finds immense satisfaction in the meticulous making process, often influencing the final outcome of his work.
Olly’s work have been bought by private collectors in the UK, Europe, and the United States. Cube Gallery has shown his artworks at the Collect Art Fair in London, in New York and at Art Miami.
