Myung Nam An
I choose abstract images and symbols based on personal experiences and express them in delicate shapes and bright colours in my work.
Originally from Seoul, South Korea, and having spent part of her working life in Miami, Myung currently lives and works in London. In 2009, she was awarded a BA (Hons) in Ceramics from Camberwell College of Arts, a part of the University of the Arts, London.
Displaying a rich variation in colour palette, from bright yellow and scarlet red to more muted coral pinks and blues, Myung’s ceramics reflect her extensive travels and direct cultural experiences. For Myung, art is a lifestyle, stating, “Everything that surrounds and excites me is automatically processed and transformed into an artwork, the essence of which is the human being and their everyday life.”
Myung appreciates the versatility of porcelain, allowing her to be experimental while achieving intricate details. All her artworks are crafted by her hand alone and require multiple firings to achieve the highly reflective gold glazed surfaces and intense saturated colours she desires. In her words:
“The characteristics and limitations of the porcelain and the glazes that I use is a fundamental challenge for me. I make use of working processes that are based on analysis and experience. I approach my work in a formal and aesthetic way but one which is also sensuous, tactile and emotional.”
Myung’s work has attracted much attention over the years leading her to exhibit internationally. She has showcased her creations with Cube Gallery at Artefact and Collect art fairs in the UK, Art Miami and SOFA Chicago in the United States as well as further afield in Hong Kong and Singapore.
