Biography

That space - the blankness of a canvas - allows an object the breathing space to sit within it.

Jessica Cooper was born in Bristol, UK (1967) relocating to Cornwall at a young age. In 1989, she earned a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and Textiles from Goldsmiths College, London.

Jessica’s paintings, created using acrylic and pen on canvas, have been likened to Japanese Haiku, conveying substantial meaning with a few well-considered lines. As one critic noted, her work possesses “an authority and maturity of line filled with promise.” The titles of her pieces, such as ‘Butterfly Blue Pincushion Flowers’ and ‘All of My Friends at Once,’ are as carefully chosen as the still life works she creates.

A member of the Royal West of England Academy, the Newlyn Society of Artists, and an associate member of the Penwith Society of Arts, Jessica also coordinated the educational programme for the Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall, from 1997.

She exhibits extensively across Cornwall, including participation in the 2007 ‘Art Now Cornwall’ exhibition at Tate St Ives, and across the wider UK.
