Introducing Cathy Brickhill

Cathy Brickhill is our newest artist here at Cube Gallery, creating intricate sculptural embroidery art that appears lifelike in the sporadic shape, colour and texture each embodies.

With precision and close inspection, Cathy hand-stitches and free-hand machine embroiders her work which helps her achieve any design she sketches no matter how intricate. Each of these works are pinned to a board to give it a floating effect, within either a custom Perspex frame or handmade wooden shadowbox. From the stitched, vibrant greens of encompassing moss, and webbed, mottled mushroom caps, Cathy's work embeds her subject matter and gives it a life of its own.

For all of her life, Cathy has felt drawn to the natural beauty found in the wild plantlife and creatures of her home in New Zealand. Fascinated by the intriguing life of birds, fungi, and the process and ways of the natural world, she enjoys investigating through exploration of lesser-known areas and the collection of nature's ephemera. From these interests and discoveries Cathy creates beautiful works that feel authentic and spirited.

Cathy studied fashion design at Unitec Institute of Technology in 2004, which led to a diploma from the Design Academy. She was  a winner of the People's Choice Award Auckland Art Show, and at the Golden Art Award CHC in 2024. With her genuine interest in nature and discovery, Cathy likes to volunteer with the Department of Conservation of Bird Rescue, and explore the Tiritiri Matangi Bird Sanctuary, as well as venturing out into New Zealand's offshore islands.
