Introducing Deniz Kurdak

Deniz Kurdak, a London-based textile artist with Turkish heritage, draws on her background in theatre design to create deeply personal works that explore memory, identity, and belonging.

Using fabric and thread as her medium, Deniz transcends traditional craft by focusing on emotional repair and reconstruction, weaving personal narratives into each piece. Her work often features motifs like her grandmother’s chinoiserie-patterned pottery, symbolising her own journey from East to West and reflecting on themes of fragmentation, resilience, and connection.

Deniz’s career began with a BFA in stage and costume design, followed by teaching at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul and conducting workshops internationally. Since shifting her focus to textiles after moving to London in 2016, her work has garnered increasing recognition, including being a finalist for the Women United Art Prize in 2022. This year, her pieces have been exhibited in Istanbul and at the prestigious Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition in London.

We are thrilled to welcome Deniz to Cube Gallery, as well as showcase her work at our group show ‘Mastering The Line,’ that you can visit in person from 17 October to 2 November 2024.
