Biography

I will throw each piece quickly, embracing the wobbles and deliberately emphasising them to create movement within a static form.

Kate currently lives and works in her studio in Southwest London. In 1985, she graduated with a first-class BA (Hons) in 3D design from West Surrey College of Art and Design. In 2001, she was awarded an MA in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art.

Kate's exquisitely crafted miniature vessels beckon viewers to peer and explore. Each of these unique objects is adorned on its exterior, with surprises awaiting inspection, such as a crackled glaze or a hint of gold leaf with the occasional stopper, too.

This element of surprise, as Kate describes it, is akin to "opening a received package" and "the element of pleasure one experiences when discovering something precious and beautiful inside".

Kate has been awarded residencies in Berlin, Sydney, and Japan. Her time in Japan proved particularly rewarding, with bento boxes, netsuke, and Japanese graphics influencing her ceramics and their presentation.

Housed in handcrafted white frames, the charm for the viewer lies in the variety of surface decorations on these whimsical forms. Similar to a bento box, each compartment offers something different to sample, with the various forms and patterns complementing one another.
