Jack Frame
Jack was born in Chatham, UK (1986), before relocating to Glasgow where, in 2007, he graduated from the city’s School of Art with BA Painting and Printmaking, specialising in Landscape Painting. He is celebrated for his iconic paintings of blossom trees that appear to float in a sea of gold leaf; a highly fragile material that he uses for its sense of warmth and response to light.
Jack initiates his paintings with drawing and sketching from life, but as he notes, “as soon as I return to the studio, my imagination takes hold.” Starting with the trunk and branches of each tree, he builds up layers in oil paint from dark to light tones before delicately painting the blossoms. Describing his process, Jack says:
“The challenge is capturing real depth in the blossom; the key is colour and exploring subtle and complex tones. Photography sometimes struggles to capture this, but in the painting, you see not only the prominent overtones but also the darker undertones and how they interrelate.”
Jack is a romantic in the way he engages his artistic sensibility. Set against the gold leaf, his trees are characterised by textured paint with a concern for depicting the visual impression of the moment, especially in terms of the shifting effects of light and colour. Whether portraying fleeting moments or the life cycles of nature, Jack explains, “As a means of charting the passage of time, I keep going back to trees as a way of understanding the world.”
Jack’s early success includes a 3rd prize in the Jolomo Awards 2009 for emerging talent in Scottish landscape painting. In recent years, he has garnered a keen following of collectors in the UK and internationally. His works have been exhibited in Europe, the United States, and Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong.
