Claire Cohen
I hope that there is a sense of fun in exploring the way in which the shapes disappear and reappear as one walks around the work.
Claire currently lives and works in Bristol, UK. In 1986, she graduated from Oxford Brookes University with a BSc (Hons) in Physical Sciences. After an initial career in the technical and commercial sectors of the electricity industry, she pursued her artistic journey by enrolling at the Bristol School of Art. In 2010, she successfully completed a Foundation Diploma in Fine Art, followed by the attainment of an MA in Multi-Disciplinary Printmaking from the University of the West of England in 2014.
Her current artworks at Cube Gallery are part of the ‘Planes’ series. In this collection, each artwork is composed of single sheets of perspex, with part of the whole image on each sheet. These sheets are then arranged in parallel within an enclosed perspex box. When viewed from the front, these images merge to create a single, cohesive whole. With a joyful and colourful effect, Claire revels in playing with the brain’s ability to respond to missing information, creating the appearance of solidity from intangible, two-dimensional images.
Claire’s artistic vision is fuelled by a desire to play and experiment with materials and processes together with combining old and new techniques. Her images often take an abstract form, featuring shapes with mathematical origins and cellular structures. Utilising a palette that spans from bright saturated colours to muted tones, she expresses her fascination merging scientific ideas with shape, colour, and form.
Claire is a member of the Bristol-based artists’ groups ‘Out of Print Collective’ and ‘Group C Artists,’ as well as Spike Print Studios. Alongside her presence in the UK, she has exhibited her work internationally with Cube Gallery, including exhibitions at Context Art Miami and SOFA Chicago.
